Mixing wax,
pigments and graphite powder and applying them on aluminum panels, I explore
the tention between surface and depth. Using heat to apply the media, I am
able to play with the opacity and transparency of these materials, at turns
burnishing an area to reveal earlier layers whilst maintaining an
impenetrable density in others.
The
paintings allude to walls and patterns visible in the work conjure up images
of the stenciled interiors of old buildings long forgotten. Softly covered
with wax to seal earlier layers, the paintings have a luminous glow as light
is captured. These paintings are born out of heat and managed chaos, their
ethereal quality draws the viewer in to find the hidden life each work
contains.
